Don’t Stress, Be Strategic: Transitioning from Summer to Fall

Just two weeks ago, I was camping in California’s Sierras, enjoying the late summer sun, even as the cool nights hinted at fall. While I love autumn, I wasn’t quite ready to dive into the busyness of the ‘School Year.’ It got me thinking—how can we embrace this seasonal shift without losing that summer serenity?

Mostly,  it’s the shorter days that I rail against.

I’m a fan of light—how the sun’s rays break the night as I sip my morning coffee. But as the days get shorter, I’ve realized it’s all about how we approach this change. So, whether you’re a summer lover like me or eagerly awaiting fall, let’s focus on making this transition as smooth as possible.

So, I know firsthand what it feels like to feel overwhelmed by the shift from the more relaxed summer days to the busier rhythm of September. I get a bit sad when I hear the words, “It’s almost time to winterize our RV.”

Whether you’ve been soaking up the sun or tackling a staycation, the transition into a new season doesn’t have to be stressful.

Instead, let’s explore three easy strategic tips to help you glide into fall easily and confidently.

Reflect on Summer’s Lessons

Summer gives us that rare chance to relax and reflect, whether you were out exploring, spending time with loved ones, or enjoying simple downtime. So, before you dive into fall, take a moment to consider:

  • What did you learn?
  • Did those short breaks re-energize you?
  • Did saying ‘yes’ or ‘no’ more often make a difference?

Use these insights to set a positive tone for the months ahead. By carrying what worked forward into fall, you can maintain a sense of calm even as your schedule ramps up.

Set Clear Priorities

One of the keys to a smooth transition is setting clear priorities.

September can feel like a whirlwind—Labor Day, back-to-school events, work projects ramping up. It’s easy to get swept away. That’s why it helps to step back and set some priorities.

  • What’s tremendously important to you right now? Maybe it’s focusing on a critical project, or it’s carving out time for self-care.
  • Write down a few top priorities for the day, and don’t forget to include your health and well-being in the mix.
  • Error on the side of having fewer “tasks” and activities. You’ll be surprised by how, when you act on what matters, the rest falls into place.

AND…by knowing what matters most, you can tackle your to-do list with purpose, excited anticipation, and clarity.

Mindful Transitions

The transition from summer to fall can be a bit jarring, especially if you’ve grown used to the more laid-back vibe of summer with fewer demands and expectations.

To ease into this change, practice mindfulness. (Don’t roll your eyes… it bears repeating.)

  • Take a few minutes (start with 5 minutes) each day to check in with yourself, whether through meditation, deep breathing, or simply sitting quietly with your thoughts.
  • Ask this question: How can I show up today for the highest and best good of my family, my business, my community, and MYSELF? Then, listen and notice the thoughts and feelings that surface as you continue breathing.
  • Take 5 minutes to journal any thoughts that come to mind. Don’t judge or edit them. Just write them down. After a week, you may be surprised at what you discover.

This daily practice helps you stay grounded and centered, making the changes ahead feel less stressful and more intentional.

As we close out this week, remember there’s no need to rush back into the grind.

Instead, take a moment to pause, reflect, and decide how you want to experience each day. By strategically carrying forward the lessons and experiences of summer, you can navigate this seasonal shift with grace and confidence. Setting clear priorities and embracing mindful transitions will help you move through this time with ease.

So, as you’re setting these intentions, what if you find yourself curious about how others might approach this shift differently—based on their unique personality type?

That’s where understanding the Enneagram comes in. Imagine guiding someone to discover their true #Enneagram type, allowing them to navigate life’s transitions with more clarity and confidence.
