Community can come in many different shapes and sizes. These may include:
- Church groups
- Work teams
- Family and friends
- Neighborhood pals
- Online communities
Obviously, this is not an exhaustive list. I’m sure you can rattle off several other types of communities you find yourself involved in on a regular (or not so frequent) basis.
We are all technically a part of many communities.
We selectively choose which of these communities to be more or less involved and present within. Your involvement in particular groups or communities can vary depending on your state in life, or personal (or professional) needs.
Let me give you an example:
While raising young children, you may find it helpful to join a playgroup of other parents. While this playgroup may feel “essential” while you’re parenting small children, it may feel less important once your children are school-aged.
Here’s another one:
You have chosen to tackle an important (and big) personal or professional goal. You know this challenge is more likely to be accomplished with the support and accountability of others. So, you join a mastermind of individuals with similar passions and goals to support you along your journey. You may find that you are very active within this group when you first join, as you dig into your goal and support other members to achieve theirs. After which time you me interact less often.
That’s okay! Here’s why:
Different seasons dictate different community needs. Things can change. You can CHOOSE to participate and you can CHOOSE to step away. Both are valid options that should be thoughtfully considered.
I want to take a moment to address a common stumbling block I see when it comes to investing in communal groups. Many individuals hold back from joining a group or diving into a community if they aren’t 100% sure they’re in it for the “long haul.”
Sound like you?
Can I share a very important truth with you?
It’s okay for a community to be “just for a season.” Just because it’s not forever doesn’t mean it isn’t worth investing in to make progress and your goals.
If you’re reading this thinking, “Huh…I really could use more support and accountability in my life.” I’ve got you covered.
