When the Going Gets Tough…Tips for Dealing with Roadblock Moments

“No pain that we suffer, no trial that we experience is wasted. It ministers to our education, to the development of such qualities as patience, faith, fortitude, and humility.”

Orson F. Whitney

Any goal worth pursuing will come with its own challenges.

Over the course of my life and work, I’ve set many goals for myself (both personal and professional.) In my work as a coach and consultant, I’ve also had the supreme pleasure of walking alongside individuals and organizations in their own pursuit of growth and achievement.

I have yet to see a straightforward, challenge-free path to success.

Everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE, inevitably faces setbacks on the road to achievement. Stumbling blocks or unexpected circumstances that get in the way and threaten to throw them off course.

These roadblocks can be unique, but truthfully, I’ve noticed a few consistent patterns in the challenges that tend to throw people off track. I outline these common challenges in my recent blog post, Common Roadblocks to Personal Growth.

In some cases, these stumbling blocks are entirely successful in throwing us off track. They halt progress, kill motivation, and make it difficult for us to continue moving forward toward our goals.

But not always.

In some cases, for some people — these roadblocks are nothing more than a challenge to rise above.

What makes the difference between those who are thrown off course by the first sign of adversity and those who dig in their heels and keep moving forward?

One word: Planning.

It’s truly as simple as that.

Are you prepared for the challenges that will inevitably arise? Have you carefully considered your response?

If not – I’d highly encourage you to spend some time considering how you will respond when “the going gets tough” — because truthfully, it will.

Here are a few helpful strategies you might try:

  • Define Your Why:

When circumstances become challenging and your motivation is waning, remembering WHY you set your goals to begin with is a powerful strategy for keeping yourself on track.

If you haven’t already, I recommend clearly defining and writing out the “WHY” behind each of your goals. Place this written reminder in places around your home, car, or office where you will be most in need of this encouragement.
  • Select a “Perseverance Mantra”:

I’m a big fan of repetitive phrases. A perseverance mantra is a short and simple message that convicts and inspires you. It’s something you can pull out in challenging moments to give you a jolt of motivation when you need it most.

(Kind of like an espresso shot for your soul.)

Some examples might be:

    • “I can do hard things.”
    • “I was born for this.”
    • “I can do anything for [insert duration of time.]”
    • “Just one more step.”
  • Identify an Accountability Partner:

Sometimes, we all could use a “pep talk.” Whether it’s an encouraging “you can do it” message or some tough love from someone you trust, having an accountability partner can make a huge difference in moments of trial or difficulty.

I highly recommend identifying your accountability partner BEFORE obstacles actually arise. Oh, and don’t forget to ask this person for the support you think you’ll need.

Pre-planning your response to challenging moments is one of the greatest ways to keep yourself on track when difficulties arise. We all face challenges, that’s inevitable. But truly successful individuals have a “perseverance plan” in place that keeps them moving forward despite external circumstances.
